1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

The second blessing that Jesus became for us righteousness. Through Christ Jesus, we have been made the righteousness of God. This implied that He was made our propitiatory sacrifice through His death. Without this, we would not have been able to come to God for anything. 

The greatest exchange took place when Jesus was made sin for us so that we can be made His righteousness. The closest physical example you can have of this was when the criminal Barabbas was set free and the One who was everywhere doing good was asked to take his place in death. 

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

The concept of propitiation shows that God, because of His love for us, made provision of the sacrifice (Jesus) to reconcile the world to Himself. In essence, propitiation demonstrates God's justice and mercy. It reveals that while God is just and must punish sin, He also loves us and provided a way through Jesus to forgive and reconcile us to Himself.
