Hebrews 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Covenant are very powerful especially the blood ones. When broken can cost the ones that break it their life. Even though Abraham was long dead, God had to keep honouring the covenant between them towards the children of Israel. God had to take responsibility for the children of Israel not because of their good, but because of the covenant relationship with their father.

Jonathan and David had covenant relationship, long after Jonathan had died, David remembered his son because of oath between them. This is so important to know and to note as believers. As believers, we are not in covenant with God but the product of it. 

We are not in covenant with God, we are simply children born out of covenant relationship of God and Abraham but fulfilled in Christ. So God is responsible for us and to us because of the blood covenant. Like David, God is also responsible for our lives, you only need to come to the table daily.
