Acts 6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

You don't become what you wish only, you become what you do. The Apostles made a clear statement of their goal, to give themselves continually to prayer and God's word. This is not something they do once in a while, it is their lifetime commitment.

Some people do Kingdom business when it is convenient, other do eye service. However, when you are sold out, it becomes part of your life. The key to this is in your established walk with God. Many people just want what is in His hand, they are not interested in Him. Make up your mind to have an established walk and work with Him.

Your walk with God is first seen in your commitment to fellowship with Him through prayer and His word. This is you taking root downward, fruitfulness and other things are natural. This was the Apostles first priority, they understood that their first assignment is with Him. They were first chosen to be with Him before preaching, singing, cleaning the church, ushering etc. 

Mark 3:14 And He ordained twelve, that they should be with him(taking downward), and that he might send them forth to preach (bearing fruit).

Don't allow your work for Him become superior to your walk with Him. Make Him your first priority, by this, it becomes easy for us to work or serve effectively. He is the first and the last. Don't wake up and reach out for your phone when you have not spoken to Him. Never forget this, He is the first when you wake up, and the last before you  sleep not your phone.
