Hebrews 3:8 This is why the Holy Spirit says, “If only you would listen to His voice this day! 8 Don’t make Him angry by hardening your hearts, like your ancestors did during the days of their rebellion, when they were tested in the wilderness.

The wilderness is a place of temptation, where the real intent of your heart are manifested. You get tested by the things you don't desire, but what you love. But the same wilderness is the place where God wants you to know Him and become familiar with His person and dealings. Whatever God tells you will be tested in the wilderness. 

Jesus also was tested in the same place where they were tested and yet overcome the enemy. Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

The truth is, whatever the enemy is throwing at you now is what you have been given authority to enjoy, and share when needed for divine purposes. God deliberately allow the Israelites to experience hunger so that they would know that life is not about appetite. Your wilderness is a place of intimacy with the Lord so that when you are faced with giants, you can confront them seeing yourself in the image of Christ.
