Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The more attention you give to the flesh, the more the enemy will have rule over you. The major challenge of our Christian walk is recognizing the real battle which is overcoming the flesh. David recognized this challenge and made it a special prayer point after he killed Uriah because of Barsheba. To overcome the flesh, the Spirit must be given opportunity to rule.

This is how the Passion translation put Romans 8:5-6 "Those who are motivated by the flesh only pursue what benefits themselves. But those who live by the impulses of the Holy Spirit are motivated to pursue spiritual realities. 6 For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set controlled by the Spirit finds life and peace."

There are impulses of the flesh and impulses of the Spirit. Things you do that you may not be able to explain why you do them. David said this in Psalms "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom."

Until the Spirit is poured upon us, and we renew our mind through God's word, you will know the right things, but your actions will be different. The reason is, the strongholds must be demolished for you to experience true freedom. 

2Corinthians 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
